My Daily Practice

Yin Yoga

I’m a certified yoga teacher. My daily practice is Yin Yoga. It taught me the quiet art of putting down what isn’t mine to carry. No more holding other people’s rules or expectations.

Just space. Just breath.

That’s where I found my freedom and my serenity.

When I was twelve, an Aikido master in Colorado taught me to utilize the energy of another to deflect the body. He was about my height then, and able to throw off a number of physical opponents with ease and exquisite grace. That image taught me early that strength is not always force, but in how the force moves.

I apply this systemic concept to Yin Yoga. Repressed and difficult memories seem to inhabit the musculature and nervous system of the body, so that the force of those energies can be moved gently through and beyond. This has a liberating effect on the central nervous system, with implications for wellness and ease.

Qi, or chi, means energy. In Aikido, I learned not to oppose force, but to redirect it. Yin is the receptive aspect of energy. Not collapse–but allowing. Yielding so that force can move. In Yin Yoga, I work with that same principle in the body by listening carefully and completely to the body’s communication every step of the way during practice. No phones, no gadgets, no entertainment, just listening and responding.

Yin

Some world champion martial artists credit Yin yoga with improving their flexibility, ease, and focus.

Classic Yin yoga is slow, meditative, and receptive. Poses are held for a minimum of 1 minute, normally 3-5, targeting deep connective tissues: fascia, ligaments, joints, joint capsules, cartilage, bones and fascial networks. Rooted in traditional Chinese medicine, it can improve joint mobility and calm the nervous system.

Core Principles

  • Find your edge: Move into a pose to the point where you feel a gentle, dull sensation. Do not push to the point of pain.

  • Find stillness: Once in the pose, relax your muscles entirely and remain as still as possible to let gravity gently open the body.

  • Hold time: Stay in each posture for a minimum of 1, eventually 3 to 5 minutes, focusing on deep, steady breathing.

Dance Walking

It’s Sovereignty. It’s Flow. It’s Core Energy.

Dance Walking liberates the core energetic flow of the body with immersive rhythm. Transcendence comes from connecting to this natural, irrepressible flow.

Dance Walking liberates the core energetic flow of the body with immersive rhythm. Transcendence comes from connecting to this natural, irrepressible flow.

I noticed in a gymnastics competition that there was a natural flow to mat work and extended running sequences, like roundoff back-handsprings and aerials. This flow emerged on the basketball court when the team worked as a unit. The flow emerged again in African Dance when the drummers ignited an irrepressible groove the dancers moved to in unison across the dance floor. It is the same flow found in rhythmic long-distance walking with immersive DJ-style music.

The body may feel wary at first when transitioning from sedentariness to this form of movement. The mind may criticize or cling to daily task management engagement.

Keep going.

After a short time, the music will soothe and lift the body out of this set mind (leaving behind the mindset) as breathing increases, metabolic processes heat up, and the dominant leg muscles connect to the ground.

Play curated playlists below or any playlist you create/find that turns on your mojo switch. Once you’ve been grounded enough through your core and leg muscles, the energy will rise to the upper body and an effortlessness will arise that feels like something ‘clicking’ into place. This is the body clicking into its own intelligence.

Namaste,
